When our livelihood comes directly from the land we cultivate an real understanding of how precious life is. We harvest a bounty of roots, leaves and fruits while fully conscious of the seasons of survival endured by the growing plants. We see animals die in our stead, hunted or raised by our own hands. The gifts from plants and animals are not faceless resources, they are kin with whom we share a home.

As we take life to feed our village there is no demonstrative emotion or ceremony. Instead our grief is subtle, rich and everyday. It is a regular meditation on our own mortality. It is a realistic acceptance for all the discomforting realities in between. Connection to our food brings us a messy edge where we must gracefully bear our appreciation for life.
