June 2007 Umiak Building CampThirty eighth grade students from the Portland Waldorf School joined local outdoor adventure organization TrackersNW on an adventure from the past. At a local permaculture farm they built and launched a thirty person traditional skin whaling boa called an umiak! The wood frame was constructed from a sustainable harvest of the ailing Port Orford Cedar which is being rehabilitated and saved through the efforts of Cedar Grove Farm and permaculture expert Rick Hazard.
