Orcas Week: Giants of the San Juan Islands

San JuansOrcas: Also known as Seawolf, the orcas are the frigid Artic and Antarctic oceans to warm tropical seas all over the world. Seawolf hunts in packs for sea lions or salmon. They are a family, traveling together, lead by a matriarchal orca that can live for up to 90 years. The Siberian Yupik said the Orca lived as wolves during winter and hunted as Orcas in summer. Just the right time for a sea kayak adventure in the San Juans.

This week we journey up the San Juan Islands by boarding the ferry. We travel to several islands including Orcas and San Juan Islands. In tow is are sea kayaks other traditional boats, the perfect way to see the Puget Sound.

Arding Lays down in kayakOn San Juan Island we explore its unique history and stay at "the point" in San Juan County Park, one of the most beautiful places in the world and the best starting place for daily excursions in the traditional kayaks. We always work with all experience levels with kayaks, respecting campers needs to have a fun and successful week.

Sea vegetables are harvested and we learn to pickle them for treat that taste better than you would ever expect. We also explore the roots of indigenous technology and culture along with more recent history that nearly started a war between the British and the United States!

A trip to the Whale museum sets the scene for a charter tour in search of the killer whales and we look at where real research is taking place to learn more about these enigmatic creatures.
