Wild Lands Month: Top of the World

Kayaks

Wild Lands: This is where TrackersNW takes you to the last frontiers on Earth. We are going to see what Nature can be once again: abundant, awe inspiring and GREAT. This is Alaska

This week we hop a ferry* and travel to Petersburg, Alaska! We have the kayaks, our umiak and our sense of adventure. Here we fish the straits of Petersburg from boats or by shore. We stay in a cabin AND camp out in tents paddling from island to island living off goose tongue (not real geese), fish and berries (plus other fine gourmet food).

We hike up Petersburg Mountain, paddle among ice flows of the Le Conte glacier (the Southern most active glacier in the world) and comb the beaches for nick nacks and treasures. All this plus a charter to go check out orcas, visits to local herbalists and study the medicinal and edible plants and take excursions into Tongass National Forest.

You take home what you catch as we go into Petersburg to smoke or flash freeze it and we learn about local culture, from the Tlingket to the family fishing history of our own Norwegian self-defense instructor, Molly Strand.

Age Ranges

For 2008 we offer separate camps for students entering these specific ages.

Lil' Possums Ages 4-5 The name says it all! Lil' Possums camps are a half day to give them the experience in the natural world while having a warm and sheltered base camp to go back to. We often bring in safe pet animals like gentle bunnies and the right reptiles to help the develop a close relationship with nature.

Coyote Rangers Ages 6-8 Coyote Ranges are there for adventure. We use storytelling telling, movement arts and nature exploration to foster the natural questions they have about the world.

Otter Players Ages 8-10 Otter Players explore a little more and a little further! They are often out and about the different greenspaces in the city with occasional BERRY picking trips to local farms.

Trekkers Ages 10-13 Otter Players explore a little more and a little further! They are often out and about the different greenspaces in the city with occasional BERRY picking trips to local farms and MORE!

TrackersRITES Ages 13-18 TrackersRITES says it all in the name! Base, Mobile and Overnight TrackersNW camps are a mix of Base, Mobile and Overnights. For Base Camps students come and remain on site for the day. For Mobile Camps they adventure abroad and return to base camp later that day. For Overnights students pitch camp in the experienced care of TrackersNW Staff.
