Bird Secrets August 18-22, 2008
Birds Week: Storytellers of the forest

Picking BerriesBirds: Crow, Raven, Sparrow or Robin; Loud or gentle gossips. Birds tell us all we need to know about the days events - prying into the most private lives of such solitary folk as Fox, Mink, Snake, and Owl, they tell the tales of the Forest. Learn from them as you Learn to Listen!

This week journey through The Valley to learn more than bird calls. We use binoculars and field guides to find and identify our feathered friends AND use the bird songs and calls to help us find the furry animals. We make friends with the birds and from their vantage points in the trees and bushes they tell us all we need to know about what is happening in the forest.

We also help protect songbirds by counting ground nests in Oaks Bottom and we continue our campaign to inform cat and homeowners on how to help take care of the winged ones.

All this, plus making a "bird symphony" with instruments, a field trip to the Oregon Zoo for older campers AND a visit from a local raptor expert (and raptor friends) for younger campers.

For 2008 we offer separate camps for students entering these specific ages.

Lil' Possums Ages 4-5 The name says it all! Lil' Possums camps are a half day to give them the experience in the natural world while having a warm and sheltered base camp to go back to. We often bring in safe pet animals like gentle bunnies and the right reptiles to help the develop a close relationship with nature.

Coyote Rangers Ages 6-8 Coyote Ranges are there for adventure. We use storytelling telling, movement arts and nature exploration to foster the natural questions they have about the world.

Otter Players Ages 8-10 Otter Players explore a little more and a little further! They are often out and about the different greenspaces in the city with occasional BERRY picking trips to local farms.
