Forest Fishing, Fly & Reel August 25-29, 2008
Great Blue Heron Week: Master of the Sword

Picking Berries

Great Blue Heron: The Master Swordsman, who with the tip of his swordbill makes a decent living plying the waterways of the swamp kingdoms, catching fish, and keeping watch for those more sensitive souls such as Duck, Muskrat, and others. Learn from his tracks how to move as silently as a breath of wind, learn from his home how to dance with the fish and convince them to live on in your belly.

This week we fish. . Catching our swimming friends with a cast of a reel and a fly road. We learn about trout, carp and sturgeon; all species and how they hide, and how the heron hunts them.

We learn to cast a fly rod and a reel rod. We trawl in the Umiak boat along the river wishing for fish. We sit by the shore enjoying the last of the summer days and we learn the story of the Salmon and how they are preparing to return from the ocean, for the fall.

We sit and watch the Great Blue Heron, watch him slowly stir the waters to bait the fish with a ripple, making them think it's an insect.

We learn simple fencing: both European and Japanese and with the help of special guest instructors, every camper learns and practices our SHIFT: Kids Self-Defense, a fun and empowering learning experience designed to teach kids about staying safe everywhere they go!

Age Ranges

For 2008 we offer separate camps for students entering these specific ages.

Lil' Possums Ages 4-5 The name says it all! Lil' Possums camps are a half day to give them the experience in the natural world while having a warm and sheltered base camp to go back to. We often bring in safe pet animals like gentle bunnies and the right reptiles to help the develop a close relationship with nature.

Coyote Rangers Ages 6-8 Coyote Ranges are there for adventure. We use storytelling telling, movement arts and nature exploration to foster the natural questions they have about the world.

Otter Players Ages 8-10 Otter Players explore a little more and a little further! They are often out and about the different greenspaces in the city with occasional BERRY picking trips to local farms.

Trekkers Ages 10-13 Otter Players explore a little more and a little further! They are often out and about the different greenspaces in the city with occasional BERRY picking trips to local farms and MORE!
