Beary Picking Adventure August 4-8, 2008
Bear Week: Tao of Camp
 |
Bear: Meet the grumpy old man who never changes his pajamas - Bear! Learn from him, as the People learned of Old; what foods to eat, what herbs heal, and where to take a decent nap.
This week we eat bearies (berries) and make berry confections, concoctions, and other conflagrations. We learn about harvesting wild foods and investigate exactly HOW a bear found its way into the town of Sellwood (years ago). We find out about healing herbs from a real Naturopath and practice SHIFT: Bear Martial Arts with the Tao art of doing nothing! We shall read plenty of Winnie ther Pooh while the older campers read and practice the Tao of Pooh and journey through the Valley for the Ultimate Berry Patches.
Tons of jam is made to take home to family and friends. Fruit is smashed, honey tasted and fruit roll ups are dried. We create a solar dehydrator and even paint with bearies (berries). We will also make the ancient berry recipe of pemmican.
It all boils down to a "berry" good time!

Lil' Possums Ages 4-5 The name says it all! Lil' Possums camps are a half day to give them the experience in the natural world while having a warm and sheltered base camp to go back to. We often bring in safe pet animals like gentle bunnies and the right reptiles to help the develop a close relationship with nature.
Coyote Rangers Ages 6-8 Coyote Ranges are there for adventure. We use storytelling telling, movement arts and nature exploration to foster the natural questions they have about the world.
Otter Players Ages 8-10 Otter Players explore a little more and a little further! They are often out and about the different greenspaces in the city with occasional BERRY picking trips to local farms.
Trekkers Ages 10-13 Otter Players explore a little more and a little further! They are often out and about the different greenspaces in the city with occasional BERRY picking trips to local farms and MORE!
