Welcome to Middle Earth August 11-15, 2008
Faeries, Hairy Giants & Rangers Week: Protectors of the Forest
 |
Faeries, Hairy Giants & Rangers: Where do myths come from? And can we find that place as we travel the hushed byways of the greenwood? Join us as we explore the magical and mysterious unseen denizens of the wild places. When you look deep enough, The Oaks Bottom truly becomes a land of Myth and Mystery. We find Faerie homes, tracks of giants, and we stave off bands of unfriendly orcs and trolls with the help of rangers who roam the greenspaces of Middle Earth.
This week Oaks Bottom and the Willamette Valley becomes Middle Earth. All the campers become Hobbits, Elves and Rangers and all we learn that TrackersNW instructors are truly live-action-role-playing-nature-nerds. There will be wizards, epic journeys and a fellowship of the ring.
We practice the skills of Elves (archery), Rangers (stealth, tracking and survival skills), Hobbits (permaculture and ecology), Knights (foam swords) and Wizards (languages).
We will also cultivate "homes" for the denizens of nature. Working with ecologists, permaculturists and others to become stewards of local greenspaces. All this, plus we visit local permaculture farms to understand how gardens can become food forests.
Even more important, we quest for the Great White Oak and learn how indigenous people truly made the entire Valley a rich garden for both wildlife and the human family. |

Plus, we catch Faeries (butterflies) learn about them and then release them. See below for the specifics on the different activities and costs for different ages

Age Ranges
For 2008 we offer separate camps for students entering these specific ages.
Lil' Possums Ages 4-5 The name says it all! Lil' Possums camps are a half day to give them the experience in the natural world while having a warm and sheltered base camp to go back to. We often bring in safe pet animals like gentle bunnies and the right reptiles to help the develop a close relationship with nature.
Coyote Rangers Ages 6-8 Coyote Ranges are there for adventure. We use storytelling telling, movement arts and nature exploration to foster the natural questions they have about the world.
Otter Players Ages 8-10 Otter Players explore a little more and a little further! They are often out and about the different greenspaces in the city with occasional BERRY picking trips to local farms.
Trekkers Ages 10-13 Otter Players explore a little more and a little further! They are often out and about the different greenspaces in the city with occasional BERRY picking trips to local farms and MORE!
TrackersRITES Ages 13-18 TrackersRITES says it all in the name! We are very excited to offer cutting edge experiences that ALWAYS fundamentally shift how YOUNG ADULTS feel about their vision for life. This "shift" is done with collaborative skills that bring out the inner nature of the person. Our instructors ALWAYS take care to RESPECT the personal and diverse beliefs of the families and young people we work with.
Base, Mobile and Overnight TrackersNW camps are a mix of Base, Mobile and Overnights. For Base Camps students come and remain on site for the day. For Mobile Camps they adventure abroad and return to base camp later that day. For Overnights students pitch camp in the experienced care of TrackersNW Staff.
