Portland Animal Tracking

Whether you track for food, for photographs or for pure appreciation of the lives of animals, tracking helps you see the world in a whole new way.

We are all on a journey back to more real relationships with the land and each other. Growing up in the city, country or suburbs, many of our grandfathers or grandmothers were never able to take us hunting, fishing or wandering in the woods. Together we can change that.

NEW! TrackersPDX Club This is a $10 Adventure that is 2 hours of tracking in the Wildlife rich areas of the Scout Pit. It happens the first weekend of the month, Saturday for youth and Sunday for Adults. We will look for animal sign in the morning and train in Naturalist Skills in the Afternoon. This is an opportunity for long term Mentoring in Tracking.

Saturdays, Goto Youth (ages 6-8 & 8-10) TrackersClub PDX
Sundays, Goto Adult* TrackersClub PDX*
*ages 11-12 must be accompanied by parent on adult Session

The Animal Tracking Ultimate Series: The Power of Maps

Maps! Portals Into Another World: Some people believe an Animal Tracker only follows footprints on the ground. Tracking can be that, but also much more. TrackersNW commits our support to the best tracking instructors in the country.

The Animal Tracking Ultimate Series brings the best instructors to you. In many other programs, instructors consider themselves your "mentor" but real tracker considers herself a collaborator. Please come into our classes knowing our instructors are there to grow with you, the land and the art tracking.

Maps! Portals Into Another World: Session 1 Maps within Maps within Maps

Animal tracking is the art of maps and epic stories. Learn to see the world through layers and layers of maps. Not dry maps with contour lines but maps that shape an almost mythic tale of the landscape and the animals in it. This course in tracking is the foundation for how a hunter-gatherer sees their land.

Maps! Portals Into Another World: Session 2 Story Maps

A rich wealth of knowledge was held in the ever evolving stories of all hunter-gatherers. These were stories of the land and the people in it. They were stories that, passed down the children, retained the value of culture. Experience how story creates "vacuums" of perception, asking to pay attention to all the things moving at the edge of our awareness.

Maps! Portals Into Another World: Session 3 Rites of Passage

Rites of Passage often existed for all ages in the cultures connected to the land. They were just not for children becoming adults, they were also for adults moving to a new place of support for the community, or becoming elders. This is where we explore the deeper meaning of the stories we are told. How they can sent us out into the wilderness on quest, or a journey to find the wisdom our family and community needs to survive in the world.

If you have taken an animal tracking class before, be prepared for an entirely different experience. This class goes until dawn the next day. This class takes place at NOON until DAWN the next day. Be prepared to up all night tracking!

About Hunting

Hunting is called the Great Dance by the bushmen of the Kalahari. We move as the animal to follow it. Stopping where it stops, Seeinge what it sees. Hunting by tradtional methods means getting closer to the animal and needing to know it VERY well. It feels like a form of wordless conversation with the animal itself.

For hunter gatherers this is life and this is death. As TrackersNW we honor this heritage in ourselves while we recognize the diversity of sensibilities and opinions. So while we do hunt and harvest animals, we ONLY hunt in classes specified for it. TrackersNW honors all animals as relations and life that sustains our own.
