The Garden of Cascadia...

growing mushrromsThe Valley of the Willamette travels to the Columbia. Apple trees on the concrete, mushrooms in forest park and nettles between the houses. Along its shores and beyond we tend to a vast food forest to feeds ourselves. The People of Cascadia know that life is more than what we yield for this season, it is sustaining a harvest for 200 years and beyond.

Where there is abundance we forage, while leaving behind enough for the robin, the fox, the salmon, or the beaver. Where there is a lack, we tend to it first. Planting, propagating and knowing this care for land may not immediately feed us or our children, instead our gardener's heart nourishes our grandchildren, their children and beyond.

Harvesting in these secret places is a rite of passage. You need to earn it. We will not take you immediately out to the forest, marshes and shores that feed the people, but we will give you clues and tools on how to one day find your way there.

Low Tech Mushroom Growing

Learn about growing mushrooms without the use of a clean room or any specialized equipment. We will go over growing mushrooms in a bed of wood chips in the garden, plugged logs and stumps, and oyster mushrooms inside with espresso grounds. We will also learn how to take a grown mushroom that you bought in the store, found in te woods, or grew yourself and use cardboard to expand the mycellium and then transfer to another growing medium. Participants will go home with a King Stopharia burlap bag culture, a plugged Shitake or Reishi log, and Oyster mushroom spawn that will grow in espresso grounds.

Wild Plants Lore Bicycle Tour

Are you a cyclist who rides on the Springwater Corridor Trail? Have you ever wanted to know more about the plants growing along the trail? Which plants are edible, poisonous, medicinal, or useful for fiber, shelter, or fire making? Join Shaun Deller of TrackersNW for a bicycle tour of wild plants lore. Bicycling is a great way to travel from place to place observing the changes in landscape. We will meet at the TrackersNW "Scout Pit" at 5040 SE Milwaukee Ave. conveniently located across the street from Oaks Bottom's north entrance along the Springwater Corridor Trail. From here we will ride the trail to Powell Butte observing and discussing various plants along the journey. The tour ends at Powell Butte which is a good place for a picnic so pack a lunch if you like. In this tour we NEVER go off trail with our bikes, and we respect the fragile habitat of these natural greenspaces.
