Finally, a chance for little brother or sister to join the fun! Come outside with us. Play, learn, make messes and discoveries, and practice being a big kid! Skilled outdoor educators take your tots on a tour of natural wonders: new plant and animal friends, pet rocks, fantastical stories, and vanquished weeds. On hot or rainy days, we return to base early for enjoy art and craft activities, books and stories, tumbling, animal forms, and make-believe games. On cool days we may go for longer walks and picnic in the park. We provide constant supervision with ratios of 1:3 or better.
We do play with sticks, rocks, mud, and water, as well as bugs and bird feathers, so please bring good hearty snacks, good grubby shoes, and a change of clothes. Eating and sleeping and playing indoors, it's easy to forget that everyone else who lives outside is part of our family, too: bugs, trees, mud, flowers, birds, clouds, animals, and wind. We need the same kind of bond with them as we have with the rest of our family. They'll support us throughout our lives just as our family does. Children need much more “being outside” than a half hour at the playground or a simple walk in the woods. Real experiences are powerful. They become part of your story and become part of you. Using all their senses, instead of looking at a book or video about bugs or trees, they are immersed in them. They make real emotional connections what is wild instead of playing with plastic or wooden toys. They know it's spring because they see buds appear and they feel the wind is warmer than yesterday's. Kids need to feel they are part of the world, not just in it.
We may not be for you, you may not be for us: We help children to feel like that group of kids wandering country backyards 50 years ago: ecstatic, autonomous, tired, muddy, wet and happy from the woods and wild. We are acutely aware of full and real hazards of the out of doors after years of working in environmental education. We try to move away from the highly structured and limiting tolerances of conventional environmental education while keeping kids truly safe but not encapsulated from, or phobic of nature. We are deep patriots to the value of offering guided yet very free and transparent experiences for kids. We believe it is okay to be thirsty at times, cold at times, and wet at times. It builds empathy and care for the gifts of life. It fosters adventure and sincere accomplishment. We also believe it is critical to feel supported and cared for as they truly explore their passion and responsibility. And through a healthy life immersed in nature, they test the limits and great potential of the often untapped physical and emotional resiliency they possess. WE LIMIT group size to 8 children per age group, making a more well rounded personal experience for everyone involved.
